Dining Tables. Whether a it’s cosy 4 seater or a lengthy 20 seater, there are certain features that we look for when we’re creating our designs.

We’re currently living in a very organic time when it comes to interiors. We’re surrounding ourselves with smooth curves, padded out furniture & super tactile surfaces, producing spaces that are comfortable to hunker down in & relax. No pointy edges over here. No siree.

So, naturally, the dining tables that we love tend to be round or oval designs.

Take this Moon round table, designed for Gubi by Space Copenhagen.

Aside from the appealing aesthetic, there are other reasons to opt for a round table like this. Firstly, it’s the most sociable shape. You can see everyone directly, no need to peer around someone’s head whilst they’re happily tucking into the homemade (or not, no judgement here) meal you’ve just rustled up for them. Secondly, the singular pillar in the middle eliminates the potential for any bruised knees from awkwardly placed table legs. I’m sure we’ve all had to straddle a leg or two at some point in our lives when we’ve crammed 6 people onto a 4 person table. Am I right?

We teamed the Gubi table with these Bontempi chairs and the West Elm chandelier overhead, mirroring the round shape of the tabletop, ensuring there’s a gentle flow around the entire dining space.

Handily, this design has an older, wiser sister. If you’ve got a dining room that deserves a statement table, this oval shape is the ticket. Say ‘hello’ to a far more grand affair.

This time there are two pillars anchoring the tabletop, still both out the way of most of your guest’s knees (unless you’re friends with Peter Crouch - I’m sure he’d understand).

Again, we’ve added these Gubi chairs to add to the rounded scheme in an elegant green velvet, providing a beautiful sheen and texture but also comfort. Extremely important when you’re sitting down for a three course meal (cheese course optional).

Rivela Interiors Tip: You’ll note with an oval shape there are two ‘heads of the table’ which have a bit more extra breathing space, so we’ve made the most of it by choosing the version of the chair with cocooning arms - it’s a nice way to add some extra, thoughtful design to a dining space.

If you prefer a lighter, more neutral vibe then they also come in a Solid Oak (oiled or soaped):

We think that round and oval table designs look great in a whole mix of materials - marble, wood, travertine, concrete - and the shape can really take a playful base. Here are some alternative designs that we’re loving at the moment:
