THE KETTLE IS DEAD

There, we said it. RIP kettle.

Yes, granted, there are some beautiful kettles out there. We get it. But do we really want something taking up valuable space on our worktop when there’s a perfect alternative?

Here’s the history bit: the world’s first kettle like vessel existed a fair few years ago. It was used in Mesopotamia as early as 3500 BC, to be exact. And yes, safe to say the idea has served us well since.

Then came the first electric kettle: invented in Chicago in 1891. Again, very good. Extremely good. Life changing in fact.

But time waits for no man, or woman. And moving on with the times means getting a boiling tap installed in your kitchen.

Before the kettle purists shout out, here are our reasons:

  • We have busy lives. Do we have time to stand by a boiling kettle to wait for our cup of tea? Research estimates that we’ll spend FOUR MONTHS of our lifetime waiting in that exact moment. That’s 1,873 waking hours. Think about what else we could be doing in all that time? Having boiling water available to us in a split second eliminates the wait and gets us sipping our cup of Yorkshire Gold before we know it.

  • We’re always telling ourselves we should be ‘drinking more water’ & ‘staying hydrated’. But what if we’re not a fan of lukewarm, room temperature water? Not the end of the world of course, but our health should be a priority. Have no fear, these boiling taps produce perfectly chilled water in an instant too.

  • Arguably our most important reason is linked to the planet. Bottled water is still a huge business, but we’re all well aware of the damage single use plastic is causing to the environment. The same goes for the replaceable plastic filters for our tap water. So, being able to get fresh, filtered still or sparking water without using any additional plastic each time gets our vote.

  • Boiling taps are far more efficient in terms of energy and water. They’re perfectly insulated so they heat up the water far more quickly, plus you only use the amount of water that you actually need, rather than filling up a kettle and pouring any excess away.

Those are the practical reasons, now let’s move on to how it looks. When boiling taps first came on to the scene, styles were limited. Fast forward to today and gone are the days of modern technology only coming in a modern package. There’s a boiling tap to suit most interior styles, in varying finishes.

Our personal favourite brand of tap is the OG. The Quooker. Since inventing the idea in 1976 and unveiling their first commercial boiling tap in 1992, they’ve been at the forefront of the technology.

Here you can see how we’ve used the Quooker Cube in the Black Flex option.

The black finish sits within the dark elements of this kitchen, allowing the worktop & backsplash to take centre stage.

Rivela Interiors Tip: If you haven’t experienced a ‘flex’ tap then you haven’t lived. It’s where the end of the tap can be pulled down, like a hose, to rinse off the edges and corners of the sink. A real game changer and you’ll wonder how you ever coped without it.

Here are our other favourite picks from Quooker to suit all styles of kitchen:

So, in summary, if you’d like us to give you back approximately four months of your life - you’re welcome - we’ve got the perfect solution for you.
